SYNOPSIS

(Lyrics by Brian Yorkey / Music by Tom Kitt)

"Next to Normal" is an emotional powerhouse of a rock musical about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other. The story centers around Diana Goodman, a suburban mother diagnosed bipolar with delusional episodes, grappling with the effects on herself, her husband, and her two children.

In 2010, "Next to Normal" won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama—an honor very few musicals have ever achieved, recognized for its tackling deeply complex themes rarely addressed so directly in musical theatre. It bravely explores mental illness, grief, trauma, and the nuances of family life with emotional honesty. The Pulitzer committee recognized its significance in shedding light on mental health struggles, particularly in how it portrays the invisible challenges of living with bipolar disorder.

The show resonated for its realistic, raw portrayal of both suffering and resilience, pushing the boundaries of what a musical could achieve. By blending rock music with a sophisticated narrative, it broadened the scope of musical theatre, and that boldness, both artistic and thematic, earned it one of the highest accolades in American drama.

A runaway hit on Broadway—acclaimed by critics around the world—Next to Normal is a profoundly human story of struggle, perseverance and hope! The show was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and won three: Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress. "Next to Normal" was also chosen as "one of the year's ten best shows" by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times

This brave, breathtaking musical does not qualify as your standard feel-good musical. Instead this is something much more: a feel-everything musical, which asks you, with operatic force, to discover the liberation in knowing where it hurts.
